The Ultimate Ham & Cheese Sandwich Recipe

Makes 4 sandwiches.


  • 8 slices French bread, each about 1/2-inch thick
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 4 slices Christmas ham
  • 4 ounces Gruyere cheese
  • 1 tbsp good quality maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese


  1. Use half of the butter to butter one side of 8 slices of bread.
  2. Sprinkle buttered side of bread with grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. Flip over – cheese side down.
  3. Spread unbuttered side of bread with Dijon mustard and maple syrup.
  4. Place ham and Gruyere cheese on top. Close sandwich.
  5. Butter the bread on top and sprinkle with grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. One side of the bread on the bottom and one side of the bread on the top should have butter and cheese.
  6. Heat a pan up on medium heat. Melt remaining butter.
  7. Place sandwich on skillet and grill until cheese is melted and ham is heated. 3 minutes on each side.
  8. Flip over to cook other side. Both sides should be golden brown and crisp. Serve immediately.
