The Loft Restaurant & Deli at SandyView Farms in Spruce Grove

Brunch is my favourite meal of the day, so when my friend Meryl told me about a great breakfast place in Spruce Grove that had gluten free Alberta Pork on the menu I knew I had to make the journey west of Edmonton.

The Loft is a restaurant located upstairs above the SandyView Farms deli in Spruce Grove, Alberta. SandyView Farms began as a mixed farming operation in the mid 1920’s by Rudy Gitzel and his wife Elizabeth, south of Spruce Grove in the Garden Valley area raising dairy cattle, pigs, chicken, and horses. Eventually, after more than few farming hardships and challenges, a fantastic family bratwurst recipe brought over from motherland and a lot of hard work, the family has built a full service deli, 80 seat restaurant, and a catering kitchen in Spruce Grove.

When we arrived on a Saturday morning and walked upstairs to The Loft the place was packed and I was almost drooling at the sight of table after table topped with bacon, bacon, and more bacon. A bonus of the deli/restaurant combo is that it allows diners to try it and then buy it.

The menu is of course meat heavy, with most items coming with the following Alberta pork options:

• Old Fashioned Cottage Roll Ham
• Maple Flavored Bacon
• Breakfast Sausage
• Maple Pork Sausage
• Back Bacon Smoked
• Bratwurst Patties
• Wild Garlic, Garlic Sausage
• Hot Italian Sausage

I learned the pork comes from Ponoka and the traditional, home-style breakfast meats have no fillers (gluten free!) and are MSG free. I devoured both the garlic sausage and a massive side plate of fan favourite maple flavoured bacon; it was incredible.

Downstairs in the deli we saw all the breakfast meats available for sale along with traditional cuts of ham, chops, hocks; locally raised pork, cut fresh to order, just the way you like it.

If you live in the Edmonton area – this deli/restaurant is certainly worth the drive. You can enjoy a meal at The Loft or pick up some meat in the deli seven days a week:
