Shaw Family Farm Aldergrove
We love locally raised meats and are always keen to take a trip out to the farm to see farming practices in person. Out in Aldergrove in South Western British Columbia we visited the Shaw Family Farms for a lunch hosted by Hills Foods with the Culinary Arts Foundation of BC & members of Culinary Team Canada. There’s nothing better than dining with fellow food lovers right at the farm; especially when there’s top chefs cooking. Thanks also to Domaine De Chaberton Estate Winery and Parallel 49 Brewery for the libations for the feast.
Shaw Family Farms raises free range lamb, free range wild boar and free range heritage pork and even some turkey’s are included in the mix. We met the farmers, walked the farm, and even feed some apples to the pigs and boars before we sat down to a delicious meal.
Jamie Shaw’s father established the farm in 1967 in Willoughby moved to Aldergrove in 1998. The family has 28 acres and leases another 150. Shaw hopes to ramp up to 600 pigs a year in the next few years, and is currently raising 200 pigs as well as 200 lambs, all out on pasture, free-range and hormone free.
The Chefs prepared BBQ lamb, pig and boar with all the accompaniments and set a long table out in the field. Thankfully there was sunshine, or we’d be in the barn.
They roasted an entire lamb and cooked up wild boar and pork. This is the 500 meter diet as the food was raised so close.
Plenty of Passion for Pork Lovers at this table!
