The News:
A decade of smoking hot BBQ and community fun were celebrated at the 2015 BBQ Off the Bypass (BOTB), presented by C&D Logistics, on September 13th, 2015. The event also welcomed the 6th annual Great BC Bake-Off.
More than 5,000 meat lovers of all ages attended this free public event to enjoy free samples of delicious slow-cooked meat, purchased take home treats from vendors, and participated in free activities including face-painting, festival games and live performances by local band, The New Shackeltons
Admission was by donation, with all proceeds collected ($6,809.95) to support Langley-based TinyKittens Society, a 100% volunteer-run animal rescue to promote the welfare of cats.
Already a beautiful and hot day, the energy at this year’s competition was even hotter as more than 19 teams from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Oregon, Washington and all over BC traveled to compete for the Grand Championship title and a cash prize of $10,000 shared by the winning teams.
Visiting Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) head judges Kelly and Kathleen McIntosh led a local team of certified judges to judge a very close competition with Hog Shack Cook House taking home the Grand Championship, after achieving the highest total points in all four competition categories: chicken, ribs, pork shoulder (pulled pork) and beef brisket. With only 0.046 points behind, Lake House BBQ took home the title of Reserve Grand Champion (2nd place).
Surrey’s Stacked Racks BBQ was the winner of the Black Box competition with their turkey roll using this year’s mystery ingredients: JD Farms ground turkey, ginger and carob molasses.
