The 2015 competitive BBQ season kicked-off on March 22 in Chilliwack BC, at the Farm Store with the inaugural Barn Burner.
More than 4,000 meat lovers of all ages took in the family festivities and enjoyed free samples of delicious slow-cooked meat, purchased take home treats from vendors, and participated in free activities including a climbing wall and face-painting while listening to live performances by local band The K-O’s.
Admission was by donation, with all proceeds collected (nearly $5,000) to support Ruth & Naomi’s Mission, a non-profit organization in Chilliwack that feeds the hungry and provides shelter for the homeless.
A cool day was warmed by hot competition as 21 teams from across the Pacific Northwest, Alberta, and Saskatchewan traveled to compete. With visiting Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) head judges Kelly and Kathleen McIntosh leading a local team of certified judges, Prairie Smoke and Spice of Regina, Saskatchewan took home the Grand Championship, after achieving the highest total points in all four competition categories: Chicken, Ribs, Pork Shoulder (pulled pork) and Beef Brisket. A fun bonus ‘Black Box’ category allowed the teams to show off their creativity with mystery ingredients: duck breast, pork sausage and pomegranate molasses.
Lake House BBQ of Mill Creek, Washington took home the title of Reserve Grand Champion (2nd Place), and the winner of the Black Box competition is Smokey’s BBQ from Cle Elum, Washington. As the first fully-sanctioned BBQ competition in Canada this season, all results can be found on the official page.
While the first Barn Burner BBQ Competition and its prizes was presented by Johnston’s Pork and Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry, the event was partnered and organized by Well Seasoned Gourmet Food Store, with additional support provided by BC Meats, Social Media Minder, Edible Vancouver & Wine Country, Chilliwack Progress, Envision Financial and Hi Pro Feeds.
