If you haven’t checked out Mother’s Market, Edmonton’s only three day market open year round, you should. This weekend I stopped by my neighbourhood farmer’s market which has both familiar and new faces serving up a variety of local pork products. Open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., head to Mother’s Market at 10251-109st for lunch or to pick up that perfect piece of pork to cook at home.

1. Chef Antony Krause‘s Chorizo Dog upstairs at The Salt Room
New to Mother’s Market is Chef Tony Krause. The young chef is hand-making dry-aged traditional charcuterie (I brought his chorizo home to for my Spanish boyfriend to try and he was impressed) and serving up a selection of lunch options including the Chorizo Dog. For $9 – this hand-made sausage wrapped in a pretzel bun, topped with sauerkraut, and served with greens is a great deal.

2. Irving Farms Fresh
I have been a long time supporter of Nicola and Alan Irving, who dry cure bacon that is so good my sister in Calgary makes me drive down bulk orders of it for her. You can find a variety of cuts, off-cuts, and sausages, Irvings is my go-to place to purchase pork belly.

3. Wild Tangerine Urban Cuisine
If you miss the food that brother and sister duo Wilson and Judy Wu served up at their former restaurant – you can satisfy your craving by visiting Mother’s Market. The premium quality food company sells ready-made food products, proudly sourcing Four Whistle Farms pork for their lemongrass relajo pork, pork spring rolls, and pork de mole.

Looking for organic pork? Visit the Sunworks Farm booth by Ron and Sheila Hamilton whose farm is located near Armena, Alberta. Their pigs are provided with clean certified organic feed that is produced in our own feed mill,  meaning that the feed has been inspected and the grains have been grown without the use of chemical herbicides or pesticides. The breakfast sausages are mighty tasty!

5. Foremesky’s All Natural Market Meats
A new vendor for me, I look forward to trying the variety of cuts they offer including tenderloin, bacon and smoked chops. Another option for local pork produced with no steroids, hormones, or antibiotics, a stop at Foremseky’s means an opportunity to purchase top quality retail pork products directly from a restaurant wholesaler.
